Start here!/FAQs

I appreciate it can feel daunting to contact a producer when you're starting a podcast. The job title itself can mean so many things especially when there are so many different types of podcasts out there. This page is to help answer any frequently asked questions around what my job actually is and to help give you an idea of the time and money around starting a podcast with a professional producer.

What does a producer even do?

There are lots of different podcast producers out there but for for me, I see my job as doing the parts of production my clients don't want to do or don't know how to do. I have worked across lots of different podcasts from start to finish. I develop, I record, I direct, I edit, I sound design and much more. My job varies from client to client but if you can imagine taking all the parts of making a podcast that you don't want to do and handing it to someone else, I'm the someone else. My golden rule of making a good podcast is that it has to be enjoyable for you to make, some of my clients love research and finding guests, some love sitting with me in post and making the music sound just right, some just want to talk to people they find interesting and let me take care of the rest- they're all doing what works for them and making great shows as a result.

How much does it cost?

It depends on what you want to do really. My most common production style request is to record a one to two hour show remotely, edit it down to 30-45 minutes, mix it and upload it to a hosting platform which generally takes a day and a half. This includes one round of revisions from the client (you!) and help with setting up the tech for the recording for both you and your guest. Edits include taking out mouth noises, repetition, ums and ehs where appropriate and general making the audio sparkle along with any editorial  cuts. My second most common request is an edit without the recording which is usually a day.

I don't have a huge amount of money but I really want to make this show

That's no problem. There's ways around making shows work for your budget and lots of technology now to make the process easier. Get in contact and let's talk!

I have never made a podcast before, does that matter?

Most of my clients didn't come from a podcasting or presenting background and many have gone on to win awards, build communities and get sponsorship for their shows! All you need is a passion for the subject you want to discuss.

What's the difference between hiring you and working with a production company?

Different production companies have different offerings but generally, production companies have more people and can create higher budget shows that require a team of producers. I tend to work with people outside of the audio world as the only producer on a show. That being said, I do work with other producers on occasion and am sometimes hired on projects through production companies. I also know many production companies so if you'd like to work with me and a team then that can also be arranged! If you're not sure what would work best for your project then drop me a line and we can figure it out!
